Our Programs

  • Community Mentors

    (Aged 19+) Spend 2-4 hours/week with a “Little” playing games, watching movies, shooting hoops or baking cookies, etc. This helps the child make better choices, gain confidence, and have fun.

  • In-School Mentors

    (Aged 19+) Spend 1 hour/week with a “Little” at their elementary school during school hours playing sports, reading or making crafts, etc. This helps them work harder in school, try new things, and have fun.

  • Teen Mentors

    (Aged 15 to 18) Spend 1 hour/week with a “Little” at their elementary school during school hours talking, playing board games or drawing, etc. This helps them want to stay in school and make new friends.

  • Go Girls! Mentors

    (Aged 19 to 30) Spend 1.5 hours/week over 10-weeks with a small group of girls at local elementary/middle schools empowering them to be healthier, feel better and increase their confidence levels.

Steps To Becoming A Mentor

  • Step 1: Ensure you are eligible to volunteer as a mentor

    Eligible mentors can answer yes to all of the following statements:

    • I am 15 years of age or older (there is no upper range limit)
    • I can provide a satisfactory criminal record check
    • I can provide four satisfactory references
    • I can respect the confidential nature of our services and sign a confidentiality agreement
  • Step 2: Ensure you want to volunteer as a mentor

    Successful mentors can answer yes to most of the following statements:

    • I enjoy spending time with children and youth
    • I have the desire to build a friendship with a child or youth
    • I have time and am willing to commit to meeting regularly with my Little Sister or Little Brother
    • I can commit to volunteering for one calendar/school year
    • I am a responsible, trustworthy and stable individual
    • I am caring and compassionate
    • I can be energetic
    • I am a good listener
    • I respect the values and beliefs of others, even when they are very different from my own
    • I am comfortable communicating openly with the child’s parent/guardian and Big Brothers Big Sisters agency staff
    • I work well in a team
    • I have strong interpersonal communication skills
    • I have strong problem solving skills
    • I am able to set realistic expectations and be prepared for unexpected changes
    • I enjoy activities that children and youth may enjoy
    • I take my own safety and the safety of others seriously
    • I am comfortable with assuming responsibility for the safety and security of the child or youth during outings
  • Step 3: Work through the Volunteer Screening process

    Volunteers should read through our volunteer guidebook to learn more about our screening process. Please note you can work through the process in any order:

    • Submit your application form
    • Attend volunteer orientation
    • Request your Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check
    • Participate in a one-on-one Interview
    • Complete program specific training (as required)
